Cadaques

Magical Cadaques is a chic tourist site with its beautiful rocky coast, beaches, and coves along with outstanding culture, history, water sports, and cuisine.

Cadaques is located on the Cap de Creus peninsula in Girona, on the Costa Brava. Boasting the natural beauty of a rocky coast with beautiful beaches and tranquil coves, and the breathtaking landscape of the Cap de Creus Natural Park, this fishing village was transformed into a popular, chic tourist site - and a magnet for many famous artists. Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, the poets Garcia Lorca and Paul Alvar, and the film director Louis Buñuel all found inspiration in Cadaques in the first decades of the 20th century, but it was Salvador Dali, the famous Surrealist painter, who brought Cadaques to international fame. He often visited Cadaques in his childhood and later established a home there.

Dali's former home, near Port Lligat Bay, is now a museum which displays many of his works. The white house with 2 egg-like towers and many small chimneys is located adjacent to the coastline overlooking a small bay and was designed by Dali himself. Dali's workshop, living quarters, garden, and pool - as well as the amazing view of unusual rocks, deserted beaches, and blue water - draw crowds of travelers.

With his success, Salvador Dali brought many international celebrities to Cadaques, such as Walt Disney, the Duke of Windsor, the Greek shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos, and in the 70's Mick Jagger - which further increased the area's popularity.

The town of Cadaques is magical, featuring white houses, red tiled roofs, and colorful gates along with steep and narrow alleys and streets, many bars, and excellent fish restaurants. At the top of Cadaques Bay is its historic quarter. With its many museums and art galleries, this area is a cultural hub, reflecting the many artists and painters who took up residence there. Don't miss the Municipal Art Museum with its exhibits of works by artists who had a connection with Cadaques and the Perrot-Moor Museum which displays works of European graphic art. The 16th century Church of Santa María has been restored and stands out with its remarkable white façade and baroque style. Modernist architecture also made its mark on the town, most notably the Casa Serinyena.

For foodies, Cadaques is the place to be. The city's restaurants serve up the local specialties - many from the sea - as well as the outstanding local wines.

Cadaques' natural harbor and the crystal waters offer great water sports such as diving, windsurfing, and sailing. It is also an ideal starting point for seeing other areas in Girona, with their historic sites, beautiful nature, and abundant archaeological remains.
